Teaming Up to Care for Those in Need
University Physicians Healthcare and The University of Arizona: Jointly advancing health care for Southern Arizona
Together we have created an innovative residency program that:
- Establishes UPH Hospital as Southern Arizona's newest academic medical campus
- Addresses the physician shortage crisis in Arizona
- Provides medical care for rural areas and underserved populations
University Physicians Healthcare and The UA College of Medicine are partnering to create innovative residency programs to address the physician shortage crisis in Arizona and provide care for those in rural areas and underserved populations of Tucson. UPH Hospital will serve as the training ground, making it Southern Arizona's newest academic medical campus. Residents will gain experience with state-of-the-art equipment and work side-by-side with renowned medical experts.
The new medical residency programs in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Radiology have already received accreditation. Additional accreditations are in progress. Internal Medicine and Psychiatry will welcome their first residents in July 2008, with Radiology to follow in July 2009. When fully established in 2011, it is projected that 118 residents will be participating in these new programs.
The new programs are an essential investment to improve the quality and access to health care for the people of Southern Arizona now and in the years ahead.
