UPH neurologists provide comprehensive neurological care in one convenient location, utilizing state-of-the-art testing equipment and a diverse range of programs and treatment options. They provide diagnosis, consultation, therapy and treatment of headache, epilepsy, stroke, movement disorders, alzheimer’s and other memory disorders, vertigo and ataxia, sleep disorders as well as other neurological disorders.
UPH neurologists also perform and interpret electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) studies.
Neurology is the area of medicine in which doctors diagnose and treat disorders of the nervous system. The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and sensory organs, which regulate the body’s responses to stimuli. Because the nervous system spreads throughout the body, the specialty of neurology often overlaps with other medical specialties like psychiatry, orthopaedic surgery and ophthalmology.
Special Programs
The Arizona Comprehensive Epilepsy Program is a major resource center for patients with epilepsy, their families and the health care professionals who treat them. Services offered range from consultations to clinical trials of anti-epileptic drugs to psychosocial rehabilitation.
The Comprehensive Stroke Program was developed to coordinate three major areas relating to stroke: patient care, education and research, with a major focus on prevention. Patients are referred for all issues related to stroke.
The Headache Management Program is Southern Arizona’s only comprehensive program devoted to treating headache pain. Patients can overcome the disabling effects of headaches through the help of neurologists and other specialists including physical therapists, pharmacists and psychologists. The foundation of this program – education and self-management – is a collaboration between physician and patient, focusing on the individual needs of the patient. This program teaches each patient how to gain a better understanding of what causes their headaches and how best to control them.
