Emergency medicine physicians provide care to patients with acute and life threatening illnesses.

Serving over 100,000 patients a year, The University of Arizona Medical Center emergency medicine physicians offer a full spectrum of care for medical and surgical disorders, aiming to improve the short and long-term health of the patient. Working with The University of Arizona Medical Center's 350 specialists at the University Campus and South Campus, emergency medicine physicians provide immediate care to patients with heart attack, stroke, trauma and other acute medical and surgical conditions.   

The Emergency Medicine department is an integral part of the only Level 1 trauma facility in Southern Arizona at The University of Arizona Medical Center - University Campus, and provides nationally recognized services 24-hours a day, every day of the year.  And, the emergency medicine residency-training program has trained many of the physicians practicing in Tucson’s area hospitals.  The Emergency Department at The University of Arizona Medical Center - South Campus continues the tradition of providing excellent services to residents in Southern Arizona.  

Special Programs

Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center (AEMRC) is a Center of Excellence where physicians, faculty, and researchers work towards the advancement of research, education and training in the field of emergency medicine.  The AEMRC focuses on research in preparedness, trauma and translational research.

Major Areas of Research

The University of Arizona Medical Center emergency medicine physicians work diligently to advance the diverse array of emergency treatments.  They are working with the Consumer Products Safety Commission to prevention injury and illness from everyday consumer products. 

The department is also working to identify trends in illicit drugs and unusual effects from prescription drugs, and is teaching first responders and other medical personnel to respond to toxic terrorism events.
