The UPH Department of Anesthesiology provides the full spectrum of clinical anesthesiology services at UPH Hospital at Kino Campus, at University Medical Center, and at the UPH Surgery Center. Services include
- major and minor operating room anesthesia
- consultation services in airway management and vascular access
- preoperative patient assessment and optimization
- emergency resuscitation
- and critical care medicine.
In addition, the department operates a comprehensive acute pain service and chronic pain management service based at the VA.
UPH anesthesiologists provide expertise in all subspecialties of anesthesiology, including cardiovascular, obstetric, neurosurgical, pediatric, transplantation, trauma, intensive care and pain management. Special Programs
Simulation Laboratory: The Department of Anesthesiology owns and operates a simulation laboratory for educational and research purposes. The simulation laboratory consists of a mock operating room (OR) with an adjacent control room and debriefing area. A full-scale, computer-controlled, interactive human patient simulator is connected to conventional OR equipment. Actors play the roles of surgeons, nurses and technicians while the anesthesiologist is trained. The simulation laboratory is used for all levels of anesthesia training, from an introduction to basic anesthesia concepts and skills to advanced crisis management in paramedics, medical students, anesthesia residents and experienced anesthesiologists.
Major Areas of Research
UPH anesthesiologists conduct research on inhalation anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, central mechanisms of anesthesia, resuscitation, cardiopulmonary monitoring and pain management. General Anesthesiology
- Evaluation of inhalation anesthetics (such as pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, biotransformation and potential toxicity)
- Evaluation of new intravenous anesthetics
- Evaluation of antiemetic agents for post-anesthesia nausea and vomiting
- Evaluation of intravenous anesthetic antagonists
- Efficacy and application of neuromuscular relaxant agents
Obstetric Anesthesia
- Influence of regional anesthetic techniques on maternal analgesia
- Evaluation of opioid/local anesthetic combination and dose on maternal analgesia
- Cardiovascular effects of regional anesthesia in pregnancy.
Chronic Pain Management
- Using implantable devices to manage chronic pain
- Evaltuation of the efficacy of new pharmacologic agents for the treatment of chronic pain.
Engineering
- Evaluation of monitoring devices for oxygen delivery of cardiovascular function
- Investigation of new modalities to determine depth of anesthesia/awareness.
Clinical Trials
The Anesthesiology faculty are involved in clinical research that covers a broad base of anesthesia subspecialties, including ambulatory, cardiovascular, neurosurgical, obstetric, pediatric, transplantation, and chronic pain anesthesia management.
