Is Lap-Band Surgery Right for You?Ultimately this is a decision that you, your primary care provider and your weight-loss surgeon at UPH will make. There are many factors to consider in determining if weight loss surgery is right for you. As you go through the decision process, ask yourself if you are up to the challenges you will face.
Weight loss surgery is usually reserved for people who are seriously overweight, and therefore at a higher level of medical risk, and those who have a longstanding weight problem despite making numerous attempts to lose weight.
As with all major medical procedures, Lap-Band surgery has risks. Having your surgery at a full-service hospital like University Physicians Hospital can minimize many of the problems that may occur during and immediately after the procedure. Before you decide on this choice be sure to talk to your surgeon in detail about all the problems and complications that can arise.
Lap-Band surgery may be suitable if:
• Your body mass Index is 35 or higher
• And you are over 18 years of age
• And you were not successful in losing and maintaining your weight by other means
• And you are committed to making permanent lifestyle changes, and you are psychologically prepared to care for yourself after surgery
Reasons why weight-loss surgery may not be right for you include: • Ulcers or another inflammatory disease of the GI tract
• A condition that makes you a poor candidate for any surgery, such as heart of lung disease
• Portal hypertension
• You are pregnant
• Alcohol or drug addiction
• You can not or will not follow the dietary rules or other lifestyle changes necessary for success
