The da Vinci® Prostatectomy

Prostate removal (radical prostatectomy) is the most common procedure performed on men with prostate cancer. Typically, it is performed through large, open surgical incisions. Open surgery often results in lengthy, uncomfortable recoveries and a significant risk of impotence or incontinence. The da Vinci surgical system provides a minimally invasive alternative to open prostate surgery. It is the only operative robotic system approved by the FDA for laparoscopic radical prostatectomies.

The procedure is performed through five small incisions. The system's clear view and precise instrument control allow the surgeon to remove the prostate with less chance of damage to important nerves. An online video is available to illustrate the procedure.

Many insurance companies now cover this procedure. Regardless of your plan's current contract status with University Physicians Hospital, please call (520) 694-7670 to learn about your individual plan options.
