The da Vinci® Nissen Fundoplication

Advanced Treatment for GERD

GERD, Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease - commonly known as "acid reflux", is a common disorder that affects an estimated 21 million Americans. It is caused when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus causing a burning pain in the chest or the back of the throat. When changes in diet and lifestyle are ineffective, your doctor may recommend surgery.

Nissen fundoplication is the most common surgery to treat GERD. This surgery strengthens the valve located between the esophagus and stomach. This valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter or LES, normally prevents the flow of acid from the stomach. This procedure makes it easier for your body to keep acid from backing up into the esophagus.

The da Vinci surgical system provides an advanced, minimally invasive method for performing Nissen fundoplications. The procedure is performed through five small incisions. The system's robotic technology and advanced 3-D imaging give the surgeon a clearer view and more precise instrument control than has ever been possible.

Many insurance companies now cover this procedure. Regardless of your plan's current contract status with UPH Hospital at Kino Campus, please call (520) 694-7670 to learn about your individual plan options.
