The da Vinci® Hysterectomy

Many conditions affecting the uterus are treated with a hysterectomy - the surgical removal of the uterus. A hysterectomy may be a life-saving treatment for conditions such as uncontrollable bleeding and cancer. It is often an elective procedure to relieve chronic pain, bleeding or other conditions caused by fibroids (non-cancerous tumors), endometriosis (non-cancerous growths usually involving the ovaries) or prolapse (falling or slipping of the uterus). In some cases, doctors may also remove the ovaries because they are thought to release hormones that may contribute to the patient's condition.

Hysterectomies can sometimes be performed through the vagina. But, when the uterus is enlarged, an abdominal hysterectomy may be performed. This traditionally requires a six- to twelve-inch incision.

If your doctor recommends a hysterectomy, you may be a candidate for a new, minimally invasive procedure using the advanced da Vinci surgical system. Using this method, a surgeon can perform a hysterectomy through five tiny incisions and incorporates the latest advancements in robotic, computer technology to enhance surgeons' skills. The da Vinci system gives your surgeon greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved dexterity and enhanced 3-D visualization over traditional surgery. The minimally invasive technique can provide a number of benefits to most women - including decreased blood loss, less postoperative pain, reduced scarring and a faster return to normal activities.

Many insurance companies now cover this procedure. Regardless of your plan's current contract status with University Physicians Hospital please call (520) 694-7670 to learn about your individual plan options.
