In 2003, a unique partnership of public and private organizations in Southern Arizona came together to solve a growing health care problem. Tucson's emergency care system was being strained to its limits by increasing numbers of behavioral health and substance abuse patients.

The solution is a pair of new pioneering behavior health facilities integrated into the The University of Arizona Medical Center - South Campus.  Working in unison with the hospital, the new facilities will offer an integrated approach and a continuum of care for patients experiencing mental health issues.

The innovative, collaborative effort brings together the entire community including behavioral health care, physical health care, law enforcement, families and consumers to deliver an integrated approach to behavioral health treatment. This pioneering model of care will set the standard in behavioral health in the future.

The Behavioral Health Pavilion
This new facility will provide inpatient and outpatient services as well as emergency medical and behavioral health services. The three-level building will house an expanded emergency department, private inpatient rooms, outpatient services, classroom and teaching facilities and a  courtroom for patients admitted through the legal system.

The Crisis Response Center
The CRC will provide triage for persons in crisis and direct patients to the most appropriate facilities in the community. It is designed for those not requiring emergency or acute psychiatric care who might have otherwise been sent unnecessarily to hospital emergency departments or detention centers. The two-story structure includes a sub-acute inpatient unit and separate areas for youth and adult services.

The facilities were created through a unique partnership between public and private entities.
