Neurology Residency Program

The Neurology Residency Program combines excellent, individualized, ACGME-accredited training in an academic and clinical environment.  Residents are expected to focus on three major goals; education, service and research.  This program provides a very unique, personalized atmosphere, yet offers the benefits of large university-sponsored residency programs.

The program code is 1800331159.

NUMBER OF RESIDENTS - Two neurology residents will be selected each year.

LENGTH OF PROGRAM - We provide four years of supervised graduate medical education in Neurology in accordance with ACGME requirements.

EXPERIENCE
Clinical: The residency training program encompasses all areas of general neurology and includes subspecialty areas.  Procedural skills taught include lumbar puncture, EMG and nerve conduction testing, EEG interpretation and setup, neurotoxin injection, and occipital nerve and related nerve blocks.  Residents receive abundant learning opportunities in the Department's active clinical inpatient and outpatient services.  Rotations take place at 4 different Tucson hospitals with University Physicians Hospital Kino Campus as the primary teaching site.  Out of town electives can be arranged on an individual basis.  Residents are provided individualized attention from our experienced full time, as well as adjunct faculty and clinical staff.

There is a strong focus on underserved people in urban and rural settings.

Didactics: In addition to attending rounds on wards and in outpatient clinics, required conferences include morning report, a neurosciences course, case presentations and weekly Grand Rounds.  Some other specialty conferences that are held are the weekly Chief's Rounds and weekly conference with the Neurology Residency Program Director.

Research: Research opportunities are available at a basic level.  More advanced research activities are available and encouraged.  Our intent is to provide the necessary background for the successful practice of Neurology, as well as allowing research participation at an early stage in training.
