University Physicians Healthcare
For over 20 years, University Physicians Healthcare has provided exceptional patient care, taught new health care professionals and conducted ground breaking research as the physicians group and faculty of The University of Arizona College of Medicine.
In 1984, University Medical Center (UMC) separated its operations from The University of Arizona to become a nonprofit organization that would be independent of the state and able to compete in the local marketplace. In 1985 the Medical Service Plan, which managed the clinical business aspects of the faculty, became University Physicians, Inc. (UPI). This nonprofit corporation provided the support services of billing, accounting, contracting, purchasing, clinic management, insurance coverage and marketing for the group of physicians practicing at the hospital and working for The University of Arizona College of Medicine.
By 2005, UPI had become Arizona's largest physician group with over 350 physicians and 1,500 staff, providing services at 14 locations including UMC and Kino Campus. At this time, UPI changed its name to University Physicians Healthcare. University Physicians Hospital
In the late 1990s, Kino Community Hospital now known as University Physicians Hospital, like most hospitals, faced mounting budget deficits as the cost of delivering care was greater than reimbursement rates. This is when the Pima County Board of Supervisors began to look at different ways to manage the hospital.
On July 1, 2003, University Physicians, Inc. assumed management of all the outpatient clinics at Kino. Since then, a growing number of physicians and services have been bringing new life to the University Physicians Hospital and Outpatient Clinics.
In February 2004, the corporation entered into a management agreement to operate the hospital for Pima County. Then on June 16, 2004, the hospital license was transferred and University Physicians Hospital became a reality.
The long-term agreement between Pima County and what is now University Physicians Healthcare provides both organizations great opportunities for the future. Pima County knows University Physicians Healthcare has the knowledge and expertise to build a hospital and health center to serve our community's growing needs. University Physicians Healthcare now has much-needed space to expand programs and continue to recruit and train the best minds in health care to Tucson.
